Yamanaka Onsen possesses a long history of arts and crafts that continues even today. Just outside the immediate Yamanaka Onsen area, visitors can see remains of kilns used to make Kokutani Pottery as well as visit a cluster of workshops where artisans craft Yamanaka Lacquerware.

Bathing at Kiku-no-Yu
With a history of over 1,300 years, Yamanaka Onsen has flourished since the Edo Period when Ishikawa Prefecture was commonly referred to as Kaga Hyakumangoku. Visitors from the Maeda and Daishoji Clans would come to heal their ailments in the onsen's restorative waters, and even Matsuo Basho, a famous poet, proclaimed Yamanaka as one of the three best onsens in Japan after visiting the area. Come to Kiku-no-Yu and bathe your cares away in the waters of this historic onsen resort.

Experience the Warmth of Japanese Papercraft
Here, you can try your hand at designing your own washi (traditional Japanese paper) using a variety of pressed flowers that grow in Yamanaka throughout the year.
*There is also a two-hour Tapestry-Making Course available. (Reservations necessary.)

Kutaniyaki Pottery Workshop
(Emaki workshop also available)
Kutaniyaki Pottery originated about 300 years ago, when villagers from Kutani Village were ordered by Toshiharu Maeda, the lord of the Daishoji Clan, to create a large kiln.
Location: Kinuya
Hours of Operation: 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Saturday to Wednesday)
Workshop fee: Kutaniyaki Pottery 3,000 yen (does not include shipping fee); Emaki workshop starts at 2,500 yen (does not include shipping fee)

Lacquerware Emaki Workshop
Come and decorate wares made in the tradition of the local Yamanaka Lacquerware craft. You can buy one of the wares from the shop and decorate it with your own design (emaki).

Woodturning Lathe Workshop
At "Rokuro-no-Sato Arts and Crafts Hall", Yamanaka Onsen's brand new tourist attraction, you can create your own unique bowl under the instruction of one of the local craftsman.

Kiku-no-Yu Onsen Tamago Workshop
You can make your own fresh "onsen tamago" (hot spring eggs) by directly boiling eggs in the waters of Yamanaka Onsen!

Workshop fee: 3 eggs - 210 yen; 5 eggs - 350 yen

Sake-Tasting
Come and taste the sake that is brewed at 250-year-old Tsukushiya, Yamanaka's one and only sake brewery.

Soba Noodle Workshop
You can sign up to make your own soba noodles at “Yamaboushi”, located in the Nishidani district, famous for its many lacquerware craftsmen.

Kasa-no-Yu Foot Spa
This foot spa (ashiyu) was established next to the drinkable onsen that Matsuo Basho supposedly drank from hundreds of years ago. Kick off your shoes and socks, and relax your feet in this splendid outdoor foot spa.
